Spa Euro Race set for one of its most prestigious editions yet
The countdown is almost over… This coming Friday, May 29, Spa Euro Race 2026 will roar into action at the legendary Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps. Within the ranks of the Royal Automobile Club of Spa, excitement is reaching fever pitch as this year’s edition is shaping up to be one of the most prestigious in the event’s history since its inception in the mid-1990s.
Undoubtedly the headline act of the meeting, the Formula Regional European Championship marks the return of an FIA competition to Spa Euro Race. “This is indeed a fully-fledged FIA championship,” commented Pierre Delettre on behalf of R.A.C. Spa. “Combined with the GB3 Championship, our meeting will host the two most important single-seater championships outside Formula 1 Grands Prix. The last time our club had the privilege of welcoming an FIA championship was back in 2003, during the revival of the Spa 1000 Kilometres as part of the FIA Sportscar Championship. To find a period when this type of organisation was a regular occurrence, we need to go all the way back to 1988, again with the Spa 1000 Kilometres. We can therefore confidently say that Spa Euro Race is about to experience one of its finest editions ever, something we are extremely proud of while fully aware of the scale of the challenge ahead.”
Spa Euro Race will host the third round of the 2026 FIA FREC season following events at the Red Bull Ring and Zandvoort. American driver Sebastian Wheldon (MP Motorsport), son of the late Dan Wheldon, currently leads the standings ahead of Dutchman Reno Francot (CL Motorsport), Emirati racer Rashid Al Dhaheri (R-ace GP), Britain’s Kean Nakamura-Berta (Prema Racing) and Italy’s Zhenrui Chi (MP Motorsport).
