1988 : one can’t help feeling nostalgic while thinking about this
glorious time, when you could hear and see the Le Mans monsters fighting
their way around the most beautiful track in the world (Spa Francorchamps©
of course); yes, it is now 14 years since you last were granted the luck
to witness this incredible and unforgettable show…
2002 : but the queens of endurance car-racing missed the
crown-jewel of the Ardennes too much, and vice versa, so that they were
bound to meet again. This will happen at the Racing Festival (next
20-21-22 September), in the shape of a dress-rehearsal before the rebirth
of the mythical “1000 kms of Spa” TM planned for 2003. Some would at no
price have missed the appointment, so happy they are to come back to the
scene of their past feats, I have called the likes of Henri Pescarolo, Jan
Lammers and Mauro Baldi, or brands such as MG, Lola, Courage or Riley &
Scott. Some others will be eager to make their way amid the above
mentioned legends. Just ask MM. Bourdais, Caffi or Beretta, or the Panoz,
Oreca and Dome teams how proud they would be to clinch this one and add it
to their credits. Given all this, plus the usual self of any race of that
kind (i.e. close fighting, great strategy, impressive teamwork and so on),
we are in for something big.
And yet, this is “only” the icing on an already rather appetizing cake.
Judge by yourself: the hopeful (and often fiery) drivers from the
Formula Ford Benelux, then the ones from the Toyota Yaris Cup
and the Belgian Clio Cups will follow each other to up
the pressure. Last but not least, before the FIA Sportsars race, the
Chrysler Vipers, Porsche GT3s and other Vertigos of our increasingly
popular Belcar will entertain an audience that, let’s have no doubt, will
be as large as ever.
Definitely the place where to be on September the 22nd, isn’t it?
